Chinese Dragon Kempo
can someone help explain?
im taking Chinese kempo karate and I want to know what animal it is and what he represents. (such as dragon, tiger, a crane and eagle etc.).
Hello. The five animals in Chinese Kenpo Karate are the dragon, tiger, leopard (or panther), snake and crane. This is more than one thing then Kenpo Karate Kung Fu than answers about what exactly they mean may vary due to the interpretations of each style.
The dragon represents energy. The tiger represents power heavy crude. The leopard represents the power fast. The snake is fast, smooth and flexible movement. The crane is very similar the snake represents the rapid evasive movements soft. (Side note: Do not confuse "soft" weakness, is more a concept deflective.)
The main difference between the snake and the crane is how the strike. The snake generally uses the fingertips to strike where as in the techniques of the crane 'cranes peak "(the thumb and first two fingers together or all fingertips brought together) and" cranes head "(or" peak of the eagles "or strike the middle knuckles) are used to strike.
Moreover, the blocks using the palm of the techniques of the crane symbolize the wings of the cranes. However, the five animals do not seem to come into play in Chinese Kenpo Karate, they certainly present, but are rather abstract.
You will learn the techniques they use strikes various concepts of the five animals, probably unwittingly, and in combination with others. Also Chinese style Kenpo Karate is a direct and straight forward that deals mainly with the practical application of self-defense techniques.
The more abstract concepts like the five animals are very subtle and mostly come into play in the forms as the 'Tiger Bookset' y 'and Crane. Hope this helps:) ----------- * Edit * Yeah, "Chinese" Kenpo Karate is a bit of an oxymoron.
The "Chinese" part refers to a connection that originally had the style of Chinese martial arts, when the original concepts were brought to Japan by Taoist monks centuries ago.
However, the style is every bit as Japanese as almost any other style of Japanese martial arts, this was just Ed Parker trying to distinguish his style of all the other styles of Kenpo emerging at the time.
The style was originally called Kenpo Jui-Jitsu (although the spelling later be changed) as taught by the 21st Great Grand Master James Mitose. Mitose taught the style of William (teacher) Chow, who later called Kenpo Karate.
Chow teaches the style of Ed Parker who later called Chinese Kenpo Karate for the reasons stated above. Moreover, it true that there are more than five animals, however the "five animals" are the ones in Chinese Kenpo Karate and more relavent prominent in many styles of Kung Fu.
Once again, animals are more concepts what kung-fu and are by no emphasis in Chinese Kenpo Karate. Any of the concepts of the animals found in Kung Fu beyond the "five animals" play no role whatsoever in Chinese Kenpo Karate unless added later by an individual. I however, he needed a little clearing up:)
