 An Instinct for Dragons

An Instinct for Dragons

$31.95

From J.R.R. Tolkien's treasure-hoarding Smaug to the bright red beasts of the Chinese New Year's celebration, this magnificent, fire-breathing creature is ingrained in our culture. But where did the dragon originate? And how is it that people from Africa to China to America picture it the same? An Instinct for Dragons is anthropologist David E Jones's account of his search for the mysterious birth of this ubiquitous monster. In a vast synthesis of art, mythology, history, and anthropology, Jones finds that the dragon is in fact a universal image. Not only does every culture in the world have a name for it -- smok in Polish, tatsu in Japanese, unktena in Cherokee -- but dragons everywhere share many of the same characteristics: multiple heads, talon-like claws, blazing breath. Jones spans dragon lore from the Loch Ness monster to the Internet, as well as dragon inscriptions on cave walls, cliffs, and pots. His conclusion is stunning: not only is our fear and fascination with dragons a direct resultof the predators who threatened our evolution - eagles, leopards, and pythons - but humankind is essentially hardwired to believe in this creature. Captivating and eloquent, An Instinct for Dragons decodes the ancient puzzle of the oldest and fiercest monster.

The journey of Buddhism over centuries, from India to China and then to Japan, is the stuff of mythology. But now, in our own time, we have witnessed and documented its historic crossing of the Pacific and its subsequent evolution in the Americas and Europe. In 1982, writer Peter Muryo Matthiessen, the first dharma successor of Roshi Bernie Glassman, traveled with Glassman to pay respects to the teachers in their lineage, some of the great living Zen masters of twentieth-century Japan. What took place was an important meeting of minds representing the past, present, and future of Zen practice, an intimate connection between ancestors and descendants marking a critical point in the Zen journey from the East to the West. This historic event was captured in the moment by the selective lens of Peter Cunningham. Matthiessen''s exquisite poetic accounts of this pilgrimage, which formed a part of his book Nine-Headed Dragon River, accompany the photos.

After slaying the mighty beast, Beowulf becomes king, ruling peacefully for fifty years. Case of Howard Phillips Lovecraft

Case of Howard Phillips Lovecraft

$29.95

A highly original film, The Case of Howard Phillips Lovecraft stands out among the prestigious entries in the Century of Writers Series from Arte, partly because of the film's subject--Howard Phillips Lovecraft. H.P. Lovecraft has thrilled countless readers by creating his own imaginative worlds and mythologies in his books, becoming a legend in the process.Disgusted by life and uninterested in earthly subjects, Lovecraft intentionally avoided reality when writing, veering into the unknown and inspiring the fear that lurks in nightmares. But, how do you portray the indefinable mythology that gave birth to Dragon, or the mysterious Cthulhu, or the uniquely strange Necronomicon? Directors Patrick Mario Bernard and Pierre Trividic asked themselves this question before responding with this unorthodox documentary that re-creates the atmosphere of claustrophobia, anxiety, and madness of Lovecraft's life and work.

Give me the evocation of a rich, complex and yet ultimately unknowable other world, with a compelling suggestion of intricate history and mythology and lore. Give me mystery amid the grand narrative. Give me a world in which every sea hides a crumbled Atlantis, every ruin has a tale to tell, every mattock blade is a silent legacy of struggles unknown. Give me, in other words, the fantasy work of Steven Erikson. Erikson is a master of lost and forgotten epochs, a weaver of ancient epics on a scale that would approach absurdity if it wasn't so much fun. --Andrew Leonard, Salon.com on The Malazan Book of the Fallen Steven Erikson afflicts me with awe. Vast in scope, almost frighteningly fecund in imagination, and rich in sympathy, his work does something that only the rarest of books can manage: it alters the reader's perceptions of reality. --Stephen R. Donaldson on Deadhouse Gates I stand slack-jawed in awe of The Malazan Book of the Fallen. This masterwork of imagination may be the high water mark of epic fantasy. This marathon of ambition has a depth and breadth and sense of vast reaches of inimical time unlike anything else available today. The Black Company, Zelazny's Amber, Vance's Dying Earth, and other mighty drumbeats are but foreshadowings of this dark dragon's hoard. --Glen Cook on The Malazan Book of the Fallen One of the best fantasy novels of the year. --SF Site on Deadhouse Gates Rare is the writer who so fluidly combines a sense of mythic power and depth of world, with fully realized characters and thrilling action, but Steven Erikson manages it spectacularly. The books are reminiscent of Tolkein's scope, Zelazny's cleverness and wit, andDonaldson's brooding atmospherics; yet all combined with dazzling talent into a narrative flow that keeps the reader turning pages. Some writers open windows on worlds, Erikson opens worlds and makes them so real, so magical, you're not sure if you can escape--and I don't want to. -Michael

This unique collaboration by two multiple award-winning creators results in a feast of visual and lyrical splendour. Millions of years before the emergence of humankind, the great dragon civilization dominated this world. It left few traces behind save legends and one mighty structure: Dragonhenge. The dragons were profound storytellers, and collected here are tales from their oral mythology-from tales that explain the origin of all things to legends of battle and conquest. The fusion of magnificent art and singing prose is both deeply affecting and poignantly observant of foibles we may recognize in ourselves.

Ingersoll became intensely interested in dragon worship & the dragon myth during a journey in China & Mongolia. In the royal city of Peking appears the apotheosis of the dragon in every conceivable form of symbolism & architecture. Dragons leading up the steps of temples & palaces of the Manchu emperors and the superb dragon screen guarding the approach to one of the royal palaces are but two of the numerous examples of the universal former belief in these mythical animals, and of the still prevailing beliefs among the common people of China. The present work will arouse a widespread interest among students of animal form & history on one hand, and of folk lore, primitive religion & mythology on the other.

 Dragons and Dragon Lore

Dragons and Dragon Lore

$9.43

This rare and fascinating book is filled with incredible information about the oldest mythological story in the world -- that of the dragon. Similar stories exist worldwise, in all cultures, of this elusive and powerful creature. The author, Ernest Ingersoll, has slated that the dragon is connected with the powers and doings of the earliest gods, and like them is vague, changeable and contradictory in its attributes, maintaining from first to last only one definable characteristic -- association with and control of water. The strong point of this book is that it is so all-inclusive. China, India, Korea, and Japan are covered in the East, as well as Babylonian and Egyptian legends, while Welsh, English, Irish, French, and other tales of Christendom are covered in the West. Other topics like the origin of the dragon are found, plus a complete overview of the dragon as being the divine spirit of the waters and the dragon as a rain god. Ingersoll contends that the dragon mythology was actually born in the East, then carried to the West later. The ancient gods of the eastern world played both good and bad roles, which caused the legends of dragon and dragon-slayer to spring up. Many of the early gods were strongly associated with dragons and serpents, as the walls of many ancient temples will attest. When the evil dragons of prehistory were carried over to the Western world, we found ourselves with Satan, who inherited the dragon's horns, red color, tail, cloven hoofs, and wings. This was no coincidence. The name of Satan (Shatan) also came from an Oriental language of the East -- out of Persia. Most of us in the West have no idea of the depth and magnitude of dragon lore intheEastern world, but that is the most important part of the dragon story. This book is rich with facts and is extremely well researched. It will cause one to wonder why so many dragon stories from so many separate places around the world seem to have so much in common.

 I, Dragon

I, Dragon

$10.42

Once in every 20 years, a work of fantasy is so powerful that it creates its own mythology. I, Dragon is such a book. All other tales you?ve read about dragons are lies and half-truths. Now, for the first time ever, is the true story of the decimation and final extinction of all the Mystic Beasts told by the 3,000 dragon who survived it. Shartallion XII is an eighty-foot long, onyx Dragon Prince of the Kiln with a volcanic temper but with the eyes of an angel that see into other dimensions. One of the select few dragons in possession of the Diamond I, he is also a shape-shifter, able to step in and out of identities, including those of human beings (whom he finds utterly corrupted and into whose entities he sometimes becomes lost). Annointed at an early age as ?The Dragon of Destiny? Shartallion has also accidentally unlocked The Asking Prayer, a mantra through which one man has been given the power to disintegrate any Mystic Beast ? dragon, gryphon, unicorn or Kohmm
